June 6, 2012 Buzz Compass – No More Hits Vol. 18 [NMH 018]

Some chilled out tracks coming from Russian producer Andrey Bychenkov, aka Buzz Compass, on the latest No More Hits record. My favorite is “Tonight,” an instrumental love affair that blends repetitive guitar chords and a relentless bass line with an ensemble of strings, horns, synthesizer and vocal snippets. It’s a perfect balance of repetition and variation to put you in a lethargic pool-side sort of trance.

December 15, 2011 Buzz Compass – No More Hits Vol. 16 [NMH 016]


Finding myself torn between desiring pure originality and honest to goodness classic tracks, I have decided that I am still leaning towards the classics. I wonder sometimes how long the fad of “they don’t make ‘em like they used to” lasts and I am starting to believe it never ends or begins, it’s just a matter of when you jumped on the train. That being said, No More Hits is at the forefront of the classic sounds, from the 90′s “Prescription-esque” deep house of Nicholas to the late 80′s retrospect house of Simoncino and all the corners in-between. For this release they have Andrey Bychenkov, aka Buzz Compass, at the controls. The big tune on this one is definitely “Think About.” Andrey loops up Lyn Collins’ iconic piece “Think About It” for the instrumentals and uses Loleatta Holloway’s acapella from “Crash Goes Love.” This is such a genius blend, it takes Loleatta’s vocals completely out of it’s original 80′s electro context and puts it over raw funk. Sounds like her vocals where meant for this tune and not the original.

June 12, 2011 Nicholas – No More Hits 14 [NMH 14]

No More Hits is back with one of my personal favorite producers, Nicholas Iammatteo. This 4 track EP is chock full of those classic re-interpretations Nicholas and the No More Hits label are loved for. I asked Nicholas about the EP and he let me in on some of what went into this release.

Nicholas’ favorite on the EP is the second track on side A entitled “If This World.” The vocals are taken from Marvin Gaye and Tammy Terrell’s song “If This World Were Mine.” The track leaves the classic soulful vocals for the most part completely true to the original but layers it over some of that deep electric 90′s 4/4.

“World of Confusion” is a heavy enthralling 85 BPM edit of Undisputed Truth’s 70′s psychedelic funk song “Ball of Confusion.” This is actually Nicholas’ second edit he has ever made, it was produced a year ago and is finally being released now.

My favorite track on the EP is “I Know a Place.” The horns in this track get my blood pumping and the vocalist’s message is so great, “I know a place where they don’t care who you are, or who you know.”

B1 is another good soulful re-interpretation, it’s tracks like this one where you understand the aural appeal No More Hits is after. Classic talented vocalists and musicians getting a chance at reaching a new generation and another chance at filling floors with a revamped production. This track has a lot going on in it, guitars wailing, a vocalist belting his soul out onto the floor, and a chunky beat to keep things going.

April 22, 2011 Buzz Compass – No More Hits Vol.12 [NMH 012]

I always smile when I see a release from No More Hits in the flood of e-mail notifications in my in-box. The label proprietor has a soft spot for those blissful nostalgic tunes and the artist on the twelfth installment starts things off on that exact note.

A1 is an edit of Patrice Rushen’s “Forget Me Nots,” a solid straight forward cut with some added FX.

A2 gets interesting with “in the thick of it” style editing. This one builds around a sweet head jerking loop and keeps the energy moving with only quick reverse effects and EQ drops as breaks in the track.

B1 stands out by far, this one makes the 12″ worth it. This one feels like the electronic arrangements are twirling around you. Further into the track a one of a kind playful synth is introduced and it bubbles along side nicely with the tracks funky bass line.

B2 is along the lines of the jazzy numbers Buzz Compass is known for. This one goes downtempo and really shines, perfect lounge music.

Artist Bio Nicholas:

If you find it difficult to locate classic American underground dance music of quality in Orange County then why on earth would you think to look in Italy? The answer lies in one individual who has has taken on the mighty task of sculpting a global scene and put in more than his fair share. Let’s be thankful residents of U.S.A., that both classic sounds and songs are tended to by those who could easily be distracted by their own countries immensely deep culture. Italian native Nicholas Iammatteo, at his young age of 25, has an impressive and extensive sense for deeper dance music, on the same level of heavy hitters like Iron Curtis or Ilija Rudman.
