Soft Metals is a live duo with two members, Patricia Hall & Ian Hicks. They hail from Portland, Oregon and have recently relocated to Los Angeles to further pursue their craft of acid-drone proto-house synthesizer dance music. Patricia lays down siren style vocals over Ian’s warehouse inspired electronic musings to create a one of a kind sound.

27/01/12 Soul Clap @ Focus (Feb. 28th)

Soul Clap is Charles Levine & Eli Goldstein and they are coming all the way to OC from Boston. Soul Clap had their first productions released on AirDrop Records and were later picked up by Crosstown Rebels and DJ Kicks. They also have a couple releases on Double Standard with Gadi Mizradhi of Wolf + Lamb. They have really picked up steam as of late and we are lucky to catch these guys while they are riding their wave success. Expect to hear some fresh and diverse tunes over at Focus when these guys play.
They may have only gotten their feet wet in the production world but they are completely immersed in DJing. They really know what is up with music, don’t just stick to one camp and know how to tailor the sound to a crowd. They do musical consulting work for a wide host of companies, yeah never would have thought huh? I usually feel weird about that sort of work but I can’t really hold anything against these guys, they make some good tunes. Have a listen for yourself.

OC is getting a fresh new weekly headed by none other that Adult Contemporary & American Standard label head Kumar. If anyone in OC should be taking on a weekly it should be this guy, he is an absolute vinyl junkie who is constantly on the lookout for the peculiar delights.

Here are some free versions of two of Sylvester’s tracks. If you don’t know already, Sylvester is an iconic figure in the legacy of disco. Sylvester is the embodiment of all that was flamboyant and theatrical in the disco scene. He was a true diva by nature. First track is an edit of “Do You Wanna Funk” by Disco Syndicate. Next up is a house track off the label Balance, sub-label to Prescription and distributed by Cajual. This one samples “You Make Me Feel” and is from ’95.

19/01/12 Shep’ N Wily – Retrofit #7 [RETROFIT7]
Two of Habituate’s favorite producers, Jay Shepheard and Tad Wily, team up for the 7th release on Retrofit. Jay and Tad ease on in to things with steady pieces of boogie and 80′s proto house. Track A2, “The Electric Model,” really showcases the unique sound of this duo, the out of tune brass synthesizer that chirps in and out of this piece sounds like Tad’s style and the melodic progression sounds like Jay’s doing. The biggest tune on this release is definitely B2. “Hefty Done Me Right” (TW Dub Cut) is a kitschy funked out late night romper. It blends the perfect amount of sexiness and friskiness. If you are wanting more, keep on the look out for a Shep’ N Wily full length album scheduled for release this year.

A highly under appreciated moment in night life is the walk to the venue. It’s where one has a chance to reflect alone, with a date/lover, or with a few intimate friends. It’s where the character of a party is developed; the surrounding neighborhood says a lot about a perspective night out. A city at sleep, an industrious work horse at rest, or a desolate back alley in darkness brings out the creeper. The creeper is the social context of a night of dancing. Are the party goers marginalized subcategories in need of release or are they status-quo in decay? Are they youth in search of absurdity or are they veterans of a scene guarding the gates to their paradise? Perhaps they are over stimulated youngsters who gained access to a hyper specific identity through the internet, there to spectate but hardly participate. Whatever it may be, when you walk the night, it’s always something to remember.

Have a listen to the original 1979 version by the Skatt Brothers and the 2012 remake by The Phenomenal Handclap Band. Also included is a mix by Frankie Knuckles that opens with “Walk the Night,” at none other but the birth place of house music, The Warehouse.
